Cultural advances

When walking down the street in any country, a single white female will find they receive a response from any passing males.

After discussing this with many other females who may have ever been in such a situation, I have come to the conclusion that as long as you are breathing and have breasts, your complete aesthetics don’t actually seem to matter.

Take the scenario of a passing vehicle for example. Girl walks down street. Guy drives past. Guy yells out window. Girl doesn’t quite understand what was said because guy was yelling out window from moving car. Does guy expect girl to be impressed? And even if girl is impressed, can guy really be deemed as successful when, by the time girl is supposedly impressed, guy is still driving and no longer even on the same street as girl?

I mean, do guys really think this is a brilliant pick-up tactic? Yelling out of car windows at girls who they barely got a glance at, could be increasingly annoying and only share a few seconds with anyway if you could even call it that?

If this has ever actually worked for someone, that’s a story I would love to hear.

But anyway, moving on.

The type of reaction one may receive in the street, of course, varies from country to country, city to city, race to race.

For example, walk down the main street of Cleveland and you’re going to receive quite a different male reaction than if you were to wander down a French Rue…

But New York City is a melting pot of different cultures. So how can one know what to expect?

Culturally speaking, some people are just more forward than others. And while some women may stand to take offence to particular behaviours, I think we just need to understand that in their culture this is how it’s done.

Now I’m not saying I will ever make excuses for rude or arrogant men who are crass to women, or anything of the like. I’m merely asking you if you think we should take into consideration someone’s cultural background before we judge so quickly?

Hispanic men, for example, seem to have no problem in a) speaking to women and b) making it immediately clear what they want. (I can now also say the same is true for the NYPD…) While Australians and the like tend to be shyer and a lot less clear.

Obviously these are huge generalisations and I haven’t allowed for minorities and statistical anomalies… but in my experiences (which is all I can really comment on), this is what I have discovered.

So, ladies - The next time someone hits on you in the street, before slapping them, perhaps consider where they came from (if at all possible) and have a little understanding about how someone else’s mind may think.

And, men - If a woman slaps you on the street. Maybe take the hint.

But, culturally speaking, we’re all humans. So is there really any excuse for our behaviour??
