 After-dark skateboarding ban

After-dark skateboarding ban

17 Sep, 2009 05:20 PM
SKATEBOARDS, roller-blades and foot scooters will be banned from Queensland roads after dark from October.

Transport Minister Rachel Nolan said the change was an effort to further improve safety on Queensland roads.

Wynnum District Traffic Branch acting officer in charge Senior Sergeant Neale Stoneley said this was not an issue in the Redlands community, but warned it could change.

The initiative is part of a national standardisation of road rules and a $40 fine will be issued to people who continue to skateboard after dark.

Skateboards, roller-blades and scooters should absolutely not be banned from night time use!

It fastest mode of transport without having to use a car, taxi or bus.

If you ban those, you might as well ban cyclists, then motorbikes and then cars...

It would be pointless, there is always going to be a way for people to get hurt or cause trouble.

Redlands Local,

I will agree that you can use your vehicle at night if you get lights including indicators, brake, head and tail lights and get your vehicle registered and insured.

Until then, any driver who runs over you does so with no ramifications and is allowed to sue you for damages to their vehicle. Obviously you do not realise how hard you are to see at night.

This is to save your life, you fool.

Skate boards etc should not be allowed on the roads at any time of the day or night. They do not have brakes and kids don't have helmets.

I live in Ormiston and have the misfortune to live on a slope that finishes at a T junction.

I watch kids as young as two nearly killing themselves as they come down the road at top speed on scooters, boards or roller skates and woosh round the corner on the wrong side of the road.

The police don't want to know about it. An accident waiting to happen but at least it'll finish now at 6pm!

Between 1996 and 2006 vehicle related fatalities outnumbered skateboarding related fatalities 6,812 to 6.

This is not about safety.

It could be legislated that skateboarders wear helmets and reflective gear. Bicycles aren't registered.

This is purely about a vocal minority of older people who forget that they were young once too.

In a country and a society where childhood obesity and climate change are the biggest issues, banning physical activity and transport of this nature is ridiculous.
