THE Eastern Busway could be extended beyond Capalaba in the future, a senior Redland City Council manager has suggested.
The planned busway will connect Capalaba and Buranda along Old Cleveland Road, but TransLink says the final stages between Carindale and Capalaba may not be needed until after 2026.
Redland City Council wants the State Government to complete the busway sooner, with a focus on improving the situation in Capalaba in the next five to 10 years.
Acting chief executive officer Greg Underwood said he believed planning should also be undertaken to extend the busway to Cleveland.
This could follow the Moreton Bay Road corridor which includes land set aside from Capalaba through Alexandra Hills to Wellington Street at Cleveland, just north of the Redland Hospital.
Mr Underwood said his preference was for this land to be used for a cycleway and busway rather than a road.
On-road bus connections would then link up with Victoria Point and Redland Bay.
