Close encounter of the koala kind

Close encounter of the koala kind

02 Nov, 2009 03:56 PM
WHEN Redland resident Harry Norbury noticed a bundle on the side of the road at South Street, Cleveland last Friday night, he stopped to take a closer look.

What he found was one scared koala.

Other motorists helped to steer the young koala across South Street to some bushland.

Early the next day, Harry found another koala in a local park, walking close to the road (pictured above).

When an officer from Daisy Hill Koala Centre arrived she looked at photographs Harry had taken earlier and came to the conclusion that the koala had cataracts and was blind in one eye. The officer tried to catch the koala who was high in a tree so he could be relocated to the reserve at Daisy Hill, but he was difficult to catch. The officer recorded details and will be keeping an eye on him in the future.

The Daisy Hill Koala Centre is open daily from 10am to 4pm. Entry is free; phone 3299 1032.
