Dancers bring magic to holidays

08 Sep, 2008 05:26 PM
NINE-year-old Ellie Norton is eagerly anticipating the coming school holidays more than most youngsters.

The Wellington Point resident successfully auditioned earlier this year for the Brisbane City Youth Ballet's (BCYB) magical production of Cinderella and has been rehearsing weekly ever since.

Ellie was selected as a member of the Junior Extension Company, which is an extension of Brisbane City youth Ballet, for younger talented dancers with particular potential. The young dancers who make up the Junior Extension Program will perform as Evening Stars in Cinderella.

Ellie will join 60 young dancers, ranging in age from eight to 18, from all over Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and as far north as Maryborough, to take to the stage for four performances only of this full-scale production.

Artistic Director, Janine McGrath and Assistant Artistic Director and former Royal Ballet Company dancer, Leslie White and their production crew, delight in creating memorable annual youth ballet productions, that are both professional and highly-entertaining for children and adults alike.

"For me, the most important element in producing this ballet is magic. I have had many sleepless nights thinking of all the wonderful possibilities in this version that will be the most magical ballet I have produced to date," said Ms McGrath.

"It's a great family piece," said McGrath. "Amidst this wonderful romantic love story with a happy ending there is much comedy. It's going to be highly entertaining."

"Additionally, the calibre of dancers that auditioned for BCYB's production this year was particularly outstanding and when the audience takes their seats for Cinderella, they will be assured of a spectacular performance."

BCYB is a community, not for profit organisation with the central aim of providing performance opportunities for the student dancers of South East Queensland. Each year young dancers from all over Queensland audition for the opportunity to perform with the BCYB company.

BCYB is committed to presenting full-scale traditional ballet productions which have been most enjoyable for its family based audience. BCYB prides itself on providing positive and enjoyable experiences for the youth of Queensland and actively encouraging a new generation of ballet-going youngsters.

Cinderella will be performed at the Conservatorium Theatre at South Bank from September 27-28, with 10am and 2pm daily performances and will feature enchanting scenery, lavish costumes and ravishingly beautiful dance.

Dancers will meet patrons in the conservatorium foyer after each performance.

Prices range from $28.70 for children to $38.60, however, adult tickets are at the children's price if purchased before September 22.

Tickets may be purchased by calling QTIX 136 246 (booking fee applies) or by booking online at www.qtix.com.au General enquiries can be made by phoning 3422 0896 and further information is available at www.bcyb.com.au
