A STITCH in his side has helped sew together a strong father and son relationship for Guiseppe Strati, 42, of Cleveland, and Alex, aged 10.
The pair will enter this year's Gold Coast marathon as a father and son tag team.
Guiseppe said that the training experience had proved a wonderful chance to "chat and catch up", something that may not otherwise have happened.
"When Alex got a stitch, we could talk about it and about strategies to deal with it," Guiseppe said.
A former marathon runner, Guiseppe said he was keen to introduce the sport to Alex who was running for the first time.
Alex will compete in the 4km run while Guiseppe will compete in the 10km run.
"It's about getting out there and doing it. I belong to a group at New Farm called Lazy Runners and they help me maintain focus and Alex has been doing cross country at school. I have been impressed with his diligence," Guiseppe said.
"I used to run 20 years ago. I found it a way to get out and switch off - a good way to de-stress and focus on the day ahead. It's an opportunity to escape for a while," he said.
Guiseppe said that being in a running group offered greater variety and forced him to do that which he might not have otherwise.
He said he was pleased with agility results he and Alex received at a recent "boot camp".
He intends to enter the Bridge to Brisbane marathon in August.
