Five escape as boat overturns

FIVE boaties had to be rescued after their eight- metre vessel overturned off Frenchmans Beach, North Stradbroke Island on Saturday afternoon.

It's believed the boat had been travelling from Point Lookout to Amity Point when a large wave hit it just ly before 2.30pm.

One person was rescued by the Westpac rescue helicopter, three were picked up by Point Lookout Lifesavers and one swam to shore.

No one was injured, but two people were given oxygen onshore.

Raby Bay Volunteer Marine Rescue Commodore Keith Williams said the boat had yet to be salvaged.

"The boat is extensively damaged and has about 1000 litres of diesel onboard," he said.

Point Lookout Surf Lifesaver Callun Lovitt said everyone was rescued quickly with no one hurt.
