Have a say on wetland plan

22 Nov, 2011 12:38 PM
REDLAND City Council wants community input into the planning process for wetlands in and around Weinam Creek.

The council will consider the comments when it draws up its Wetland Draft Landscape Master Plan.

The wetland area the council wants comments on extends from Moores Road, Redland Bay in the north, to Cleveland Redland Bay Road in the south west.

The area provides a large flora and fauna corridor linking Redland Bay and Mount Cotton to Moreton Bay and cuts across council’s divisions 5 and 6.

Councillors for both areas, Cr Barbara Townsend (Div 5) and Cr Toni Bowler (Div 6) will hold a community feedback session for those who want to view plans, talk to the landscape designer and comment.

Cr Townsend said the wetlands and parkway were key recreational facilities.

Cr Bowler said the area was one of the most significant public spaces in Redland Bay, with hundreds of people using the pathways and facilities each day.

Feedback session

** A community feedback session will be held on Sunday, November 27, from 10.30am-3.30pm, at Fielding Park (at the picnic rotunda), 1 Habitat Drive, Redland Bay. Community members will have an opportunity to review the plan, talk to the landscape designer and provide feedback. The draft plan can also be viewed on Council’s website www.redland.qld.gov.au and comments can be submitted online. Comments close December 16.

Redland City Mayor Melva Hobson said the wetland was an important part of the Redlands environment and lifestyle.

“I would recommend that residents get involved to make sure their wishes for the area are heard,” Cr Hobson said.

“Your input will help to guide the council in planning for community recreation facilities.

“The Weinam Creek Wetland Master Plan aims to enhance the public usability of the wetlands, as well as improving the health of the environment,” she said.

The plan’s “key objectives” include providing a range of recreational activities along the creek and wetland system for local residents and visitors.

The council hopes the plan will enhance the natural systems of the Weinam Creek Wetland and expand significant vegetation communities within the creek corridor.

It is hoped the plan will provide a balance between urban living and the environment and provide accessible open public space.

Here we go again, Community Consultation, LOL. They already know what they want to do but will pay lipservice to anyone who wants to waste time talking to them.

Cr Bowler was in the paper asking for community imput in relation to the land near Indigiscapes recently, how about an update Cr Bowler?

Why not just fill and build as we used to do. Some of the best people in the Redland live on filled swamp to use the original name.

Wetland sounds just so 'PC Green' and is so loved by those opposed to any more moving into the Redland. My real backyard is landfill but its not for those moving my extended backyard.

I suggest a large drainage pipe down to the marina, backfilled to a standard to support housing.

It's easy remove the melaluecas and dredge it right up to the Miessner rd so the bay island ferries can run right up to wienam st and then build a proper parking facility on the old government land across the road and return the foreshore to what it should be rather than a carpark.

Why do we need councillors? Surely the council staff can call a "community feedback session". I thought Councillors had they finger on the pulse and knew what their constituents wanted. Make the decision and move on it. Whatever your decision it will not be right in many eyes, so why bother asking.

Do you think i'm a little synical?

Honestly believe we elect the councillors to run the City without rushing back to the rayepayers to get reassurance that thet are right or for direction. Just do it, you are never going to make everyone happy. So just do the best that your conscience tells you. The ratepayers will let you know at the next election.Stop being influenced by the loudest voice. Biggest voice often attached to smallest brain.

Bit too much judgmental, maybe.
