A HUGE garage sale will be held this Saturday to raise money to help the earthquake victims of Haiti.
The garage sale, organised by the Rotary Club of Cleveland, will be held from 6am to 5pm this Saturday, February 13.
Good quality donations of clothes, books, paintings, furniture, electrical goods, toys, games, and other household items are needed.
Donations can be dropped off between 3pm and 6pm, from today until Friday, at the former Cleveland McDonald's site, now a warehouse, where the garage sale will be held on Saturday.
The site is in Russell Street, opposite John Street and opposite the Healthworks Fitness Centre.
A truck will be available to pick up large or bulky quality donations on Friday by contacting either Graham Lewis on 0433 395 917 or Gordon Lawrence on 0417 630 532.
As organiser of the event, Rotarian Gordon Lawrence said he hoped to repeat the success of last year's Fire and Rain garage sale, which raised more than $15,000 for the victims of the Black Saturday Victorian bushfires and North Queensland floods.
"We're incredibly lucky to be a fairly affluent community whereas Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world, and they now have even less," Mr Lawrence said.
Redland City Mayor Melva Hobson donated a 1988 painting of the Talgai homestead in Merrimac by Denise Balson, saying she had "more paintings than walls, and we're raising money for people who don't even have walls any more".
All of the money raised on the day will go direct to Haiti through the Rotary Foundation, which also puts together Shelter Boxes, containing tents that can accommodate up to 10 people, medical supplies, tools, educational equipment, cooking utensils, a small oven and more to send to crisis-hit areas around the world.
Any left over donations from the garage sale will be given to Cleveland-based charity African Equity, to be shipped to their orphanage in Kenya.
The Help for Haiti garage sale is supported by the Bayside Bulletin.
