FOR Mount Cotton man Kim Dry, the Ride to Conquer Cancer in August will be his first marathon.
He started road cycling about eight months ago and will soon face his biggest challenge - covering 200km through the scenic Somerset area in South East Queensland in two days.
In his spare time, Kim rides around 50km at least once a week. He said he found the motivation to compete in the Ride to Conquer Cancer through a family history of cancer. His his wife, Paula, is currently fighting a brain tumour.
So far, Kim has raised $6435. His goal is $10,000.
"I believe that one day a cure [for cancer] will be found; this cure depends on medical research," Kim said.
"So please help me make this journey on the weekend of August 20-21, by making a donation.
"Any donation, big or small, will get us closer to achieving our goal - a world free of cancer."
Kim said he would put aside his fear of wearing lycra in public to take part in the charity event, which he described as a "challenging but an exhilarating experience".
The money raised in the Rio Tinto Ride to Conquer Cancer will benefit the Queensland Institute of Medical Research, one of the largest research institutes in Australia.
To help Kim's cause, you can donate money by visiting www.conquercancer.org.au, selecting donate, searching for his name and following the prompts.
