Locals flock to Narnia

07 Sep, 2009 04:19 PM
LOCALS and sight-seers from as far as New Zealand descended on Cleveland Point last Thursday for the first day of filming for the next Narnia film, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

The production tells the tale of Lucy and Edmund Pevensie who return to the fantasy kingdom Narnia where they meet up with Prince Caspian for a trip across the sea aboard the royal ship The Dawn Treader.

Along the way they encounter dragons, dwarves, merfolk, and a band of lost warriors before reaching the edge of the world.

Birkdale mother Lyn Fullerton went down to Cleveland Point to check out the action with daughters Sarah and Bethany.

"It's an educational experience, so I'm not worried she's missing a day of school!" Mrs Fullerton said of Year 9 student Bethany.

"We've been planning it for a while and coming down regularly to check on the progress."

Sarah said they had spotted a number of young stars of the film, including characters King Caspian (Ben Barnes), Lucy Pevensie (Georgie Henley) and Skandar Keynes (Edmund Pevensie).

"We were very happy fans to see them, but we weren't planning on mobbing them!" Sarah laughed.

"I don't think they've even bothered with bodyguards because we're so laid back here."

Bethany said she'd also spotted centaurs and various other mythical creatures around the set.

Redland Bay residents Denise and Bob Woosnam brought their guests from Christchurch, New Zealand, Arlene and Peter Sowman, to see the set as part of showing them around town.

"I'd heard about it but we hadn't seen the set until today, and it's a lot bigger and busier than we'd expected," Mrs Woosnam said.

"My grandkids Jay, 7, and Charlie, 4, were down here last week and they said to me: 'Grandma! You have to see it!', so here we are!"

"It's magnificent, it's a shame our grandkids can't see it, it's always more fun when you can watch the grandkids' reactions!" Mr Sowman said.

Michele Wied and Nat Evans came down from Currimundi to visit family who told them to swing by Cleveland Point.

"We've never seen a film set before so it's quite exciting, we were very surprised to find out it was all happening down here," Ms Wied said.

Filming is expected to continue while light is good for the next three weeks.

Still waiting for an explanation as to how they were able to remove the trees. Was there an application and approval process? Anyone? I thought this was a "green council"?

A big thankyou to all the cast and crew who took the time to come over and chat to the small crowd of onlookers at the "filmset" today (Wed 16/09), they made the outing even more memorable for the family.

Such a shame the Grandstand was removed. The crowd watching today would have loved the elevated view and a chance to sit for a while.

If the reason for removing it was due to people being unsteady on the steps surely a few caution signs would have covered the liability aspects, instead of robbing the majority of a good view.
