Brisbane wedding planner Sally Neilsen was planning her own big day when her fiance suffered eight catastrophic strokes, leaving him completely dependent on her and his family for all his needs.
Sam was just 23.
Sally and Sam's love story moved the nation with its courage and determination when it was shown on Australian Story in June 2011.
Sam was the love of her life, and she was going to stand by him regardless.
With searing honesty, Sally recorded in her diaries the highs of each small step in Sam's recovery. The book Sammy, I Love You (Allen & Unwin, RRP $24.99) is the result of those diaries.
It is written with beautiful simplicity.
"I came to write my diaries in my darkest hours," Sally said.
"While heart wrenching to write, I wanted to record the honest truth of how I felt at every step of our journey."
Sally will be guest author at the next Grand View Literary Lunch on Wednesday, February 22 at noon
