Man dies after accident in Birkdale

12 Aug, 2010 05:42 PM
A MELBOURNE man, 33, is reported to have died in hospital after being struck by a car in Birkdale nearly two weeks ago.

A police spokesman said initial investigations suggested the man had been walking along a dark stretch of Collingwood Road about 8.50pm on Saturday, July 31 when he was struck.

The 26-year-old male driver was not injured.

Police investigations are continuing.

My thoughts and prayers are with the injured man. I hope he makes a full recovery.

Parts of Collingwood Road, especially near the Tarradarrapin Wetlands, are very dangerous as there is little or no footpath, poor lighting & open stormwater drains on the wetland side of the road.

This road carries a lot of traffic & given the state of the footpath, pedestrians are forced to walk dangerously close to the edge of the road. Urgent attention by council is required.

This man is my nephew. He isn't really a Melbourne man because he was born and bred here in the Redlands / Wynnum area, and just moved to Melbourne recently for work. He was only up here for the weekend to celebrate a special family occasion. His injuries are extremely serious - hopefully he can pull through this. All of his family and friends are desperately hoping and praying for him to make a full recovery. Thank you for your kind thoughts Dianne.

My mother in law found him along collingwood on her way back from work, luckily she is a nurse she was able to assist.

She was wondering how he was.

It is good to know he is alive in hospital.

All our thoughts go out to him and his family.

Anyhow as long as he is ok, that is what counts.

I too am very sorry that a young man was hit on Collingwood Road, and it is greatly hoped that he will recover fully as soon as possible.

Would it be possible for Alluranora or Paul G to let me know more details of how this accident occurred?

I would like to try to ensure better safety is provided in this area.

Unfortunately an impression has been given that council has not installed footpaths.

Footpaths exist along both sides of Collingwood Road where there are houses, and all along the northern side (protected by a fence from the road over the wetland area) right up to and past Mary MacKillop School.

These have been in existence for many years.

Perhaps the councillor should wait until after the police investigation before getting all holier than thou.

Maybe the evidence will bring a different conclusion than what is being jumped to here by those who have little or no knowledge of the incident.

Let's just wait!!!!
