MP wants State to take over SMBI

MP wants State to take over SMBI

02 Nov, 2009 04:30 PM
Redlands MP Peter Dowling (LNP) has called for the State Government to take the Southern Moreton Bay Islands out of the Redlands Planning Scheme, effectively removing any council jurisdiction over the population.

Following the SMBI residents' protest at Redland City Council chambers last week over paid parking to be introduced at Weinam Creek ferry terminal, Mr Dowling said the state would do a better job.

"The council has historically taken out a lot of potential development on the islands, most notably fighting a resort proposal for the islands that would have provided 200 jobs to residents," Mr Dowling said.

"Is it discriminatory when other park and rides are free to encourage the use of public transport? Yes, park and rides are seen as an investment in a viable transport system, but not in Redlands and not at Weinam Creek.

"I ask that this government look at the issues of the Bay Islands and set in place a policy that will allow the islands to prosper.

"I ask the State Government to intervene and prevent the council from discriminating against SMBI residents by charging for parking."

Mr Dowling said if the state took over the islands, it could zone for education and health precincts, with the projected population of up to 25,000 people justifying a small hospital.

It would also need to bring in integrated, TransLink ticketing, regulate a barge run to allow residents to drive on and drive off the islands, and the ability to drive island to island for medical services.

But he acknowledged that in his time as a councillor and deputy mayor, he had no indication of a better plan from State Ministers.

"The [State] plan was no plan and still is. There is no plan to roll out TransLink for the island ferry service. There is no plan to link the islands to each other. There is no plan for parking. There is just no plan," he said.

"I appreciate what the council is trying to do with paid parking, they're trying to change long term behaviours, but they're really just using a screwdriver to perform open heart surgery."

CORRECTION

A petition presented to Redland City Council on Wednesday protesting the changes planned for parking at Weinam Creek contained 1717 signatures, not 1117 signatures as reported.

Doesn't Dowling know it was the LNP that 'transferred' ownership to the Redlands Shire Council.

I suggest he read the Parliamentary record and word search SMBI.

The core problem is that the islands were transferred without sufficient money also given to the former RSC to fund future development.

No State Government Labor or LNP will reverse this decision given the investment required.

Hey percy, of course he knows.

But being in opposition he will come up all sorts of hair-brained ideas, anything to get his face into the papers and/or TV.

Yes. And what did Mr. Dowling think of the plan when he was in council? Do tell us Peter. It's all on record.

Why say something nice when he was a hopeless councillor and now hopeless as a state MP? I mean seriously all the stuff that he could put out on local issues surely he would put something out without affecting his short-term memory?

Dear Mrs. Marsh. so you would like me to say something positive about our Pete. Let me think. No, sorry. nothing comes to mind. Hang about. Peter is no longer in council. That has to be a good thing.

He has left and we will all dance a jig when you leave too...

I am amazed at the negative comments that you have received about this speech that Peter made in the Queensland parliament. Peter and his mother who lives on the islands have always had the interests of the islands in hand. When I was President of MBCIA he always came to our meetings and he was supportive of our efforts to have the Islands joined to the mainland.

I feel confident he has the support of all islanders who want to connect the islands to the mainland and give the Redland Bay residents their seaside back.

He is a rising star in the LNP opposition and could be a shadow cabinet minister if they ever get their act together and become an effective opposition.

His proposal for the State to take back the Islands from the Redlands City Council is an excellent idea and eventually we could have a plan for orderly development of the SMBI.

Dear Mrs. Marsh.

Like blind, thirsty sheep, you and others are being led down the path to a well of poisoned water.

Can you show me where in the plan does it say you will not have parking? Have you actually looked at the plan?

If you have, tell me on what page does it say that your parking is to be taken away?

That's what your two leaders are saying. My copy does not say that.

And then, ask your hero Peter what he thought of the plan when he was in council.
