New depths to clean up Australia

08 Mar, 2010 05:29 PM
CLEAN Up Australia Day efforts reached new depths on Sunday.

Volunteer scuba divers joined shore-based teams in the clean up efforts off Amity Point on North Stradbroke Island.

One of the organisers, Carolyn Hahn, said about 46 people had helped to collect about 2.5 tonnes of rubbish from land and the sea.

"We hardly touched the surface," Carolyn said.

Common items collected included fishing line and rods, cigarette butts, polystyrene containers, used nappies and shoes, with divers also collecting a parking sign and some piping with a tap still attached.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Clean Up Australia Day.

Redland City Council had not finalised its Clean Up Day activity report at the time of going to press.
