THE Redland City State Emergency Service unit has brought home a swag of awards from the recent Brisbane Regional SES awards ceremony, including the Regional Unit of the Year for the third consecutive year.
Recipients included Michael Patchet, who was named Regional Member of the Year for his outstanding dedication and commitment to both the Redlands and communities affected by Cyclone Yasi, and the Emerald, Lockyer Valley, and Brisbane floods.
Michael said he was surprised by the honours.
"I've done over 230 hours a month over the Christmas period," he said.
"I've been volunteering for six years, but one of the things that has stood out was helping out at the Brisbane floods.
"I helped out for eight days in a row. The rotten food was pretty bad."
Redlands SES controller Tom Short said Michael was a deserving winner of the award but was modest about receiving a 20-year service clasp.
"It was a pretty big shock at the ceremony to get all of the awards for the Redlands SES, especially getting the regional unit award for the third year in a row but, yes, it was nice to be awarded too," he said.
Mr Short said he originally decided to join the SES with a friend, just for fun. "It was good fun and it's good fun now. We have about 220 members at the Redlands SES at the moment," he said.
"But the look on Michael's face was great when he got his award - he was like a stunned mullet."
Redlands SES member Philip Whitlock received a 15-year National Medal and 10-year Meritorious Medal, while Karim Rifai was awarded a 10-year Meritorious Medal and a certificate of appreciation.
Byron Shreeve was awarded a certificate of appreciation.
Jason Atherinos, Ben Holder and Garhame Hillier were also all awarded a certificate for service to the Redland SES unit.
