REDLAND gymnast Thomas Pichler is making a last-ditch bid for an Olympic berth at the London 2012 test event this week.
While Australian women secured a team's berth at the 2012 Games with a top eight placing at this year's world championships, the men have been left to fight for spots in the individual all-around.
Pichler and South Australian Sam Offord took part in a week-long training camp in London before the test event at the O2 Arena, which runs from January 10 to 18.
They will be among 40 gymnasts taking part, all striving to make the yet-to-be-determined cut-off, which is expected to be between the top 20-25 placings.
Should both make the cut-off, Gymnastics Australia will select one of the competitors to go to the London Olympics starting July 27.
Pichler dominated the recent Australian selection trial for the London test event, finishing first in five of the six apparatus events.
The dual Commonwealth Games gold medallist looms as Australia's best hope of securing a start in the men's program at the Olympics.
Impressed by the facilities at the London training camp, Pichler said: "It has been great here in Lowestoft and we have had a productive training camp as we look to secure places as individuals at the Olympics during the London test event."
