AS you sit down and look up at his face, you feel welcomed.
Jesus Welcomes All Children, by Birkdale sculptor Georgette Schwantes, is a captivating new piece of art, which she has just unveiled in time for Christmas, the commemoration of Jesus' birth.
Georgette was commissioned by Sacred Heart Primary School at Sandgate to sculpt the life-size statue of Jesus for the school's courtyard.
After three months of hard work, the sculpture was recently delivered to the school.
"The principal Chris Bathersby wanted an arrangement for children to look up and be welcomed by Jesus as they ate their lunch," Georgette said.
"I went to the school and had a look where the principal wanted it.
"Although I suggested another spot, we were talking about the same sort of Jesus. We were on the same level."
The sculpture is made out of a selection of different materials including fibreglass, wire, cement rendering, high quality metallic paints and seal, which is surrounded by seating made out of the same materials.
The sculpture of Jesus measures 1200cm by 1200cm and is about 1350cm high, while the other sculptures (seating) measure 1200cm by 600cm and are about 400cm high, placed in front of Jesus at about 45 degrees.
“The coating is hard enough to drive a truck over it,” Georgette said.
“Jesus has a kind and understanding look about his face.
“There are two other seating arrangements on which children can sit and together with the block that Jesus is seated upon there is enough room for a child to sit on either side of him.
“I was quite surprised with myself, how appealing he is. I am Catholic myself, so maybe it sparked a connection.”
Despite the connection, Georgette said this sculpture is not her most favourite creation.
“They (sculptures) are always my favourite until the next ones come along.
“All my works are one offs and originals. I love the challenge of creating something completely different.”
Georgette, who has a degree in fine art/sculpture, has sold into private and company collections throughout Australia and in eight countries.
With more than 25 years experience, Georgette also holds sculpture lessons.
“I dedicate a whole day once a week to my students. On a Thursday, I hold a morning, afternoon and evening class,” she said.
“It’s a two way street because it’s refreshing for me and refreshing for my students.”
