Sex offender relocation sparks meeting

07 Jul, 2008 05:38 PM
CONCERNED parents have been invited to attend a public meeting at Carbook on Tuesday night after convicted sex offender Dennis Raymond Ferguson moved into a home in the area.

Corrective Services Minister Judy Spence would not confirm Ferguson's address on Monday but said his acreage property was two kilometres from a high school and 2.2 kilometres from a primary school.

Police and media were camped outside a Carbrook property on Monday afternoon.

Ms Spence and child protection advocate Hetty Johnstone are expected to attend a community meeting on the issue at Kimberley College from 6.30pm on Tuesday.

State Labor Member for Redlands John English encouraged worried parents to express their views at the public meeting.

"As a father of a daughter who lives in the suburb I understand people's concerns," he said.

Ms Spence called for calm, saying Corrective Services staff had helped find a suitable new home for Ferguson.

“Since the Courts chose to release Ferguson as a free man, the Government has stepped in to try and manage him," she said.

“Neighbours were notified on Saturday by both Police and Correctives Services that a sex offender may be housed near them.

“A well respected Christian based group has agreed to provide support to Ferguson.

“This is a group experienced at working with prisoners in general and also prisoners who are sex offenders.

“They will support Ferguson 24 hours a day, seven days a week and will work to keep him settled.

“While I understand the concerns over Ferguson, I appeal for calm and I appeal for people to leave him alone."

Ms Johnstone, founder and executive director of child protection group Bravehearts, said no one wanted a sex offender living in their community.

“But the reality is that every community has child sex offenders, mostly unknown to community members," she said.

Bravehearts will hold an information session for concerned parents on Tuesday night. Queensland Police will also attend.

Ms Johnstone told the Bayside Bulletin she would talk to parents about how to teach their children safety tips.

She hoped the meeting would be "constructive".
