Storm wipes out power in Redland

13 Feb, 2012 03:36 PM
More than 3779 houses were without power in parts of Redland City and the southern bay islands, after severe thunderstorms hit parts of south-east Queensland this afternoon.

The Bureau of Meteorology cancelled the severe thunderstorm warning for Redlands at 5.30pm.

At 5.05pm, Energex was attending to more than 8000 customers in Logan, Redlands and Ipswich without power.

Energex said there had been about 2000 lightning strikes and 80km/h wind gusts which brought down powerlines in all of the affected areas.

Energex is urging people to keep away from fallen power lines and wires and call 13 19 62.

The storm, packing destructive winds, flash flooding and large hailstones, missed Cleveland but heavy rain was recorded at Mount Cotton, Redland Bay and parts of North Stradbroke Island.

The Bureau of Meteorology warned at 4.55pm that very dangerous thunderstorms were detected on weather radar near Peel Island and Mount Cotton.

At 4.55pm, more than 3000 houses were without power in parts of Redland City including Mount Cotton, Thornlands and Coochiemudlo Island.

In Redland Bay, near Serpentine Creek Road, there were 658 houses without power.

Traffic around Mount Cotton was at a standstill after an accident, thought to be a head-on collision, on the corner of Valley Way and Mount Cotton Road just after 4.20pm.

Some buses travelling into Redland City via Logan were halted due to flooding.

Emergency Management Queensland advises that people should:

  • Move your car under cover or away from trees.
  • Secure loose outdoor items.
  • Avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters.
  • Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
  • Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
  • Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
  • For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.

Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 219.

The Bureau and Emergency Management Queensland would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.
