SOME very talented Cleveland State School students have created a stunning artwork centrepiece for the school's new outdoor learning precinct.
Under the supervision of teacher aides Cathy Dwyer and Sylvia Ball, both of whom are artists, more than 36 Year 6 and Year 7 students brought to life characters from Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland.
In a vibrant and colourful mural, the students replicated a range of 'Alices', including a brown-haired Alice from an original block print done in the early 1900s and Disney's blonde-haired version in a blue dress, and other characters.
The outdoor learning precinct features the mural as well as an art teaching area, an amphitheatre with sculptures also created by students, and a large chessboard.
Cathy, who teaches after-school art classes for students, said the mural took two weeks to create, with a week spent planning and sketching the mural and another week for students to paint it.
"It was done during the second last week of school last year and we staggered small groups of students to work on different areas, so they didn't miss much school," Ms Dwyer said.
School principal Judy Dale said visual arts played an important role in the Cleveland State School curriculum, with art taught at all year levels.
"We have lots of talented students and we ensure our kids have the opportunity to shine in all areas," Ms Dale said.
"We also have talented staff who can support the students."
Ms Dale said the ambitious project had given students the satisfaction of enjoying the end product.
"The students got the satisfaction of doing this for the school and their commitment to the project was never an issue."
Year 7 student Harry McNeil, who had never painted much before, said the project was fun.
"It allowed me to express my creativity in a big painting instead of on a little piece of paper," he said.
"It looked like it would be a fun project and I thought I'd give it a go."
Later this year, student art work will be showcased at the school's bi-annual art show.
