A Redland Bay couple who lost their six-year-old son to Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) five months ago are "over the moon" they helped raise awareness of the deadly disease while participating in the Gatorade Tri-Series at Raby Bay.
PH is a rare, life threatening lung disease where the sufferer's blood pressure in the arteries of their lungs elevates, putting stress on their heart and reducing the amount of oxygen that is able to reach the tissues of the body.
Family and friends of Chris and Vivienne McGrath also participated in the event, wearing awareness t-shirts showing giant blue lips on the front.
Blue lips (cyanosis) are a sign PH, as well as chronic fatigue, shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting and swollen ankles and legs. There is no cure for PH.
Vivienne entered the NAB Enticer event, which involved a 200m swim, 5km cycle and a 2km run, had been training to prepare for the event.
"We have been doing a lot of walking and riding along the foreshore and swimming three days a week at the Thornlands pool with Anne Corrigal. They taught Alex when he was learning to swim," Vivienne said.
"We accomplished what we went there for ? to raise awareness of Pulmonary Hypertension. Crowds of people gathered around us when we finished and questioned what the blue lips meant.
"We had two canopies and my husband and I did some stencils on t-shirts of blue lips and people were talking about it all day."
Vivienne said she and Chris laughed about Alex on the day.
"We were talking to each other about what we thought Alex would be doing if he was there with us on the triathlon day. He would have wanted to participate ? he would have jumped in the race as we were running around the track and he would have been cheering his sister Chloe on as she was doing her part of the triathlon," Vivienne said.
"I want to extend my thanks to the families of the schools who participated, my husband's work colleagues and also Darren, the nursing unit manager at the Mater Children's Hospital. He came on his wife's birthday to support us."
The next step for raising awareness of PH will be a raffle, with the prize being a signed Centenary NRL football jersey for the Parramatta Eels team.
"Anyone who wants to buy raffle tickets can contact me on 3829 2353," Vivienne said.
Adam Fitzakerley from Cotton Tree was the men's triathlon winner with a time of 41 minutes and 44 seconds.
The women's event was won by Kirralee Seidel from Maroochydore with a time of 45 minutes and 31 seconds.
