IT was easy to get caught up in the palpable passion of SMBI residents chanting and heckling in the council chambers over paid parking this week.
But with half of the group leaving chambers before councillors actually debated what to do about the petition presented, it raises the question of what they actually set out to achieve.
The remaining vocal minority cheered an amendment from Councillor Karen Williams, which simply reiterated the council’s existing plan: to continue to consult and review as the plan is implemented.
Although Cr Williams said she just wanted to make sure the petitioners understood the council’s intent, Cr Craig Ogilvie took up his Orwellian soapbox, calling for residents to beware a “political dynamic that is seeking to take the community hostage”.
It may have been the adrenalin pulsing through the room or political chivalry to take the heat from Cr Townsend, but Cr Ogilvie drew the wrath of the group warning that, “if you’re not careful, you could fall into the trap of becoming an obsolete, ignorant rabble”.
Whether or not the group had actually read the more than 200 pages of master plan and submission responses and understood the amendment, the language used by Cr Ogilvie only served to inflame the mob mentality.
Cr Townsend said she was “disappointed the community didn’t get the quality of debate on the issue it deserved”.
Robin Harris of SMBICAC hit the nail on the head when he said only calm and rational dialogue will forge a solution.
