A STUNNING sunset provided a fitting backdrop as Vietnam veterans remembered their fallen mates during a commemorative service at the Cleveland Cenotaph on Monday.
Veterans and their families joined with government, community and support group representatives to lay wreaths for six local servicemen who lost their lives on active service in Vietnam.
The names of the men - Leslie Prowse, Kenneth Duffy, Erald Nilson, Kevin Conway, Kenneth Grant and Dennis Brooks - are listed on the cenotaph.
Vietnam Veterans' Day coincided with the 42nd anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, where 18 Australian soldiers lost their lives.
Between 50,000 and 60,000 Australian troops served in Vietnam. More than 500 of them died while serving their country and more than 3000 were evacuated with serious wounds and injuries.
