Villagers remember Titanic

26 May, 2011 05:19 PM
APRIL 15 was the 99th anniversary of the sinking of RMS Titanic and residents at Victoria Point’s Adventist Retirement Village marked the event with a special day of commemoration for the ship and those who lost their lives in the tragedy.

The luxury liner, owned by White Star Line, sank in the North Atlantic Ocean after hitting an iceberg on its maiden voyage in 1912 and Adventist Village nursing home and hostel maintenance officer Lynden Justins has been fascinated with the story since a young age.

Having collected a large amount of Titanic memorabilia, Lynden decided to organise a Titanic Day for residents to coincide with the anniversary of its sinking.

“The Titanic story has been a hobby of mine for 20-odd years,” Lynden said.

“Initially, the story got me in and the more I read, the more fascinating it became. I’ve been to two Titanic exhibitions – one in Chicago in 2000 and one in Melbourne in 2010.

“It was quite a story and such a magnificent vessel for its time – it was the ultimate in luxury and size and just such an intriguing story.”

Lynden dressed as a ship’s captain and even grew a beard, spraying it and his hair grey, to imitate the Titanic’s captain, Captain E.J. Smith.

He also set up a display of his Titanic memorabilia and told the ship’s story in both words and film.

Residents entered the room via a chained-off area, to replicate a gang plank, and they were given White Star Line boarding passes with their name and the name of a passenger who had been on the ill-fated voyage.

Lists of people who died in the sinking were displayed for participants to see whether their Titanic passenger had survived or died.

The kitchen also provided a morning tea that included biscuits shaped like anchors, sailing boats and fish.

Resident and World War II veteran Harley Aveling said the Titanic event was “great”.
