World Wetlands Day is celebrated every year in February. It marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on February 2, 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea.
The Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, called the Ramsar Convention, is an intergovernmental treaty that provides the framework for national action and international co-operation
for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources.
Moreton Bay is listed under the RAMSAR convention and is a wetland of international significance, its wildlife has contributed to this listing.
This year's World Wetlands theme is to focus on responsible wetland tourism.
