New projects to help islands

07 Jul, 2008 05:30 PM
A resident and visitor Welcome Information Kit and a Combined Island Community Forum are among several projects Redland City Council will support in 2008-09 as part of its commitment to the Southern Moreton Bay Islands and Redlands Place Project.

The place project is a collaboration between state and local governments that aims to address community needs, issues and aspirations on the islands and social infrastructure needs of emerging communities in southern Redland Bay.

Redland Mayor Melva Hobson said council had allocated funding and staff resources in its 2008-09 budget for the place project to work with island community organisations on priority projects.

“A new Welcome Information Kit will outline the essential community services available on the islands and help prospective residents make informed decisions about moving there,” Cr Hobson said.

“Council will also assist with supporting the Combined Bay Islands Community Forum, which will be a voice representing all island organisations,’’ she said.

“It aims to foster the exchange of information and ideas and to promote the wellbeing of island people.

“By working with the State government, these initiatives, among others, will enable council to better meet growing service demands in the project area,” she said.

Redland Bay and Bay Islands Divisional Councillor Barbara Townsend said the place project also sought to engage and empower island and southern Redland Bay communities in the decision-making process.

“We want to work in partnership with residents and strongly encourage people to get involved so they can contribute to the project’s outcomes,” Cr Townsend said.

Member for Redlands John English said he was pleased the State Government was working with council.

“It is important that all levels of government work together to achieve fantastic outcomes for the southern bay island community” Mr English said.

“The State government has contributed $55,000 towards these initiatives, including $10,000 which will go to Lifeline Community Care for the Bay Islands Family Support Project,” Mr English said.

In May 2007 the islands and the southern Redland Bay area was formally included as one of three localities participating in the project.

Lamb, Karragarra, Russell and Macleay islands, and associated mainland growth centres comprise the project area.

Linked to the place project, the Department of Communities is assessing the current system of service provision to determine how government can respond to service infrastructure supply and demand issues.

Council is investigating social infrastructure provision in southern Redland Bay with a focus on facilities, services and community networks.

interesting that the welcome and information kit gets only only $3000 of the $55000 state money allocated to this project plus $7500 from council. $50000 of the $87500 all up goes to the island schools to make animated films featuring the recollection of veteran islanders. while this sort of record is useful for future generations, it has nothing to do with 'relieving long standing island issues' as claimed by Minister for Communities, Lindy Nelson-Carr. have a look at http://bayjournal.com.au/joomla/i ndex.php?option=com_frontpa ge&Itemid=1 .

Ha ha ha ha ha.... WOW! What next? What a joke! This appears to be a scheme so as to appear to do something whilst doing nothing at all. Forget 'social infrastructure' which is obviously cheap to provide, the islands need real infrastructure, not talk, stunts or 'welcome packs', they need sealed streets, sewerage, adequate parking or a bridge. This funding is a joke, but it did get media attention which no doubt was the real aim!

I agree with Nathan, talk is cheap and the place project is cheap and nasty. The islands need real infrastructure such as sealed roads and bridges.
