REDLAND residents who visit local tips and transfer stations will soon have to pay entry fees.
The new gate fees – ranging from $4 for cars to $24 for trucks – are expected to come into effect in December.
Redland City Council will not introduce Brisbane City Council-style waste vouchers for residents but will investigate kerbside cleanup options.
Mayor Melva Hobson said the dump fees were based on the user-pays principle.
She said if the gate fees were not introduced, all ratepayers would face a greater increase to their waste charges, which only rose 2.2 per cent.
But Division 10 Councillor Helen Murray said it would be a “sad day” when gate fees came into effect.
Division 9 Councillor Karen Williams said struggling residents may choose to dump their waste inappropriately rather than pay the gate fees.
Meanwhile, the budget includes $3.7m towards building a new waste facility at Redland Bay.
