 Long wait for infrastructure

Long wait for infrastructure

05 Jun, 2008 04:39 PM
REDLAND motorists may have to wait more than 11 years for three major road upgrades to be finished because State Government timeframes have been pushed back.

An updated infrastructure blueprint for South East Queensland, released alongside the State Budget on Tuesday, reveals delays for road widening projects in and near the Redlands.

About $330 million is earmarked for the upgrades, with last year’s plan suggesting they were all due to be completed by 2015 at the very latest.

But an Infrastructure Department spokesman confirmed most of the work would now be carried out between 2018 and 2021.

The $62 million project to widen Cleveland-Redland Bay Road between South Street and Boundary Road to four lanes is not expected to be finished until 2021.

Motorists may also have to wait until 2021 to have access to four lanes all the way along Mount Cotton, Duncan and Boundary roads from Cleveland-Redland Bay Road to Tingalpa Creek. The total project will cost $73 million.

The expected completion date for the $196 million upgrade of Mount Cotton Road from Tingalpa Creek to Mount Gravatt-Capalaba Road in Brisbane is now 2019.

The estimated cost has risen by $36 million since the 2006 infrastructure plan.

While the bulk of the work is more than a decade away, about a quarter of the costs will be spent on early planning and works in the next two years to improve safety and undertake urgent upgrades.

An updated list of transport projects also confirms the latest completion date for the Eastern Busway from Buranda to Capalaba will be pushed back from 2015 to 2026.

The total cost has shot up by 400 per cent since last year’s plan, from $600 million then to more than $3 billion now.

A new $130 million bus priority project will add transit lanes, traffic cue jumps and additional stations along Finucane Road between Cleveland and Capalaba in roughly 10 to 20 years.

About $180 million is also expected to be spent duplicating parts of the Cleveland railway line so that two lines run in each direction – but commuters will have to wait until 2019-2026 for this to happen.

Currently, trains have to wait at Thorneside and Wellington Point stations until they are passed by services in the other direction.
