Recount decision pending

17 Dec, 2007 04:00 PM
A DECISION is pending on whether there will be an official recount of votes in the closely fought electorate of Bowman.

The Divisional Returning Officer for Bowman rejected the recount request.

The ALP candidate Jason Young, however, has sought a further ruling from the Australian Electoral Officer for Queensland and the Electoral Commissioner for Australia.

At the last count, Mr Young was 64 votes behind sitting Liberal Member Andrew Laming following a recheck of all votes.

Some votes have been ruled informal and vice versa, altering the narrow margin.

Mr Laming led by 102 votes last Friday week when he claimed victory.

Mr Young said he had lodged a request for a full recount so the results could be checked by “fresh eyes”.

“Because of the considerable number of ballots that were challenged, we just think some fresh scrutiny on them would be advisable,” he said.
