State Govt clearing at Thornlands under renewed attack

01 Jun, 2009 07:14 PM
A damning report on the rapidly diminishing koala population last week has seen renewed attacks on the State Government's decision to bulldoze the site of a new school at Thornlands.

Both new Cleveland LNP MP Mark Robinson and community group the Redlands Institute have demanded better from Climate Change and Sustainability Minister Kate Jones, after she responded to the report by pledging the "freeze on clearing State Government land will continue".

Mr Robinson said the minister's promise had come too late for many of "Cleveland's homeless koalas".

"The freeze didn't stop the bulldozers in Thornlands, so where is the guarantee that it will stop them next time?" Mr Robinson said.

"Why was protected koala habitat destroyed during a supposed freeze? Was an environmental impact study carried out? Will it occur again?

"I contacted local [State] Government officers immediately... and it was referred to the minister.

"Since then our request for information has been met with a deafening silence."

Redlands Institute Environmental spokesman and managing director of BAAM (Biodiversity Assessment and Management) Pty Ltd Adrian Caneris said the State Government should focus on revegetation to rectify the situation.

"Unused road reserves through Alexandra Hills and Birkdale are ideally located to act as a wildlife corridor," Mr Caneris said.

"They also offer the potential to provide a vital east-west fauna link between the predominantly north-south corridors along the city's waterways.

"By rehabilitating this precinct, we'd create a 'Greenway' for humans and wildlife alike, which the Institute has already proposed establishing in our city."

As a critic of the current Labor government, it surprises me to congratulate them on this issue.

Should we have waited another year or maybe two, for yet another study to be completed, delaying much needed infrastructure in the Redlands.

Would they have prefered a school further away, where parents have to drive their children further to school, thus increasing carbon emissions.

As a large property owner, I always love to see koalas in my back yard, but unfortunately we can't have it both ways.

And did any of the Councillors or environmentalists living in the Redlands ever build their own house on vacant land in a housing estate?

If so this land was cleared for their own self-centered development on what was once koala inhabitated land. Shame shame shame!

Redland Institute and BAAM????

Who are they??

What qualifications do they have???

Who do they answer to???

Sounds like some self appointed group with a political agenda and barrow to push. Where did they want the school. It is choice time, folks.

Do we support our children's and grand children's right to an education or do we have koalas? I tend to support people.

I suspect all those who are making all the noise do not have koala feed trees growing in their backyard. Still want wide sealed roads for their cars. This lot's hypocrisy is just mind boggling.

Why not move all the Koala colonies to Nth Staddie. Their homes would be secure, the Koalas would be protected. It has been done before with remarkable success.

Hello Burdened - its not hard to do a google search on Redlands Institute - http://redi.org.au/ and BAAM - http://www.biodiversity.tv/resear chmonitoring.htm - this is what astounds me about these comments and forums - do some research and become informed and have a good sensible informed debate rather than standing up and making a noise ........... all of you!

watcher. hello, I had a look at the websites and now believe all questions were answered by the questions.

Just remove the question marks - Redland Institute is a self appointed group pretending to speak for all.

THE site of a new state school in Thornlands has been bulldozed by the State Government, prompting complaints of a disregard for the district's declining koala population and a violation of a freeze on clearing State Government land.
