AUSTRALIA'S first family of gymnastics has moved to Alexandra Hills.
Vladimir Joura and his wife Irina recently moved from Western Australia to Alexandra Hills to take up the positions of head coach and senior coach respectively of the women's artistic gymnastics (WAG) high performance program at the Queensland Academy of Sport at Nathan, alongside their 14-year-old daughter and national junior squad member Natalia.
Mr Joura has made the move from the West Australian Institute of Sport in Perth, where he had held the position of senior coach since his family emigrated from Siberia in 1997.
In recent years the WAIS has produced some of the most successful gymnasts in Australian history, including his 2008 Olympian daughter Daria Joura, and 2009 national champion and world championships silver medallist Lauren Mitchell.
"Daria is now 19 and has stayed behind in Perth to attend university, however Natalia will attend school here in Queensland and continue her position on the national junior squad at the QAS," Mr Joura said.
Gymnastics Queensland executive director Wayne Hill is thrilled that Mr Joura has decided to nurture Queensland's young gymnastics talent.
"It's an honour to welcome the Joura family to Queensland," Mr Hill said.
"There is currently an influx of talented gymnasts in the state, including Karina Brooks, Katie Wurth and now Natalia Joura, and we believe Vladimir will play a major role in strengthening the Queensland program and realising our gymnastics potential.
"We're looking forward to building on Queensland's recent success, including national squad member Larissa Miller's finals qualification at the 2009 world championships, at which the Willington Point local narrowly missed out on a bronze medal."
According to Mr Joura, he is now focussed on returning to Perth in July 2010 to debut his new squad at the national championships.
"It is always my goal to bring out the best in my gymnasts and I am confident that Queensland will shine at next year's nationals," said Mr Joura.
