Bulldogs' back to wall

04 Mar, 2010 03:52 PM
IT will be backs-to-the-wall time for the Bulldogs on Saturday when they take on Brisbane Olympic who are fresh from a 9-0 drubbing of Taringa Rovers.

To make life even more difficult for the Capalaba defenders, five players scored in the whitewash, with Reg Davani taking three and Alek Panic two. This pair will be the ones to watch.

Despite the win, Olympic is still smarting over its earlier 4-2 defeat at Brisbane City so they will be both confident and hungry.

The Brisbane side has been playing in the Queensland State League and with plenty of practice against the State's top sides the club is determined to make its mark in the Premier League.

The big question will be can the Bulldogs rise to the challenge.

On the basis of their 2-1 win over Brisbane City at the weekend they certainly can.

On a sodden pitch at John Fredricks Park, with rain falling through most of the match, both sides turned in an exciting performance despite the conditions.

Capalaba had problems almost from the start as striker Moses Petelo, in his first fixture, came off soon after the start with an ankle injury.

He was replaced by Dylan Milne, and the youngster quickly showed why coach Tim Brown has confidence in him

Bulldogs captain Geoff Hurford almost had a roving commission, and was often seen well forward of his backline position.

Greg Thomas and Joel Drewek combined in an exciting passage, drawing in Milne to help before Thomas finished off with a great ball which a baffled defender could do nothing more than steer into the back of the net.

Milne was not quite quick enough to get to a ball put through by Red Rock Noodle Bart Man of the Match John Viney, and was offside when set up beautifully by a move begun by Hurford and set up by Thomas.

Hurford wrapped up the first half when he met a clearance from a corner and slammed in an unstoppable shot.

The second half was a thriller.

City was never far from scoring and when Houghton did well to get his fingers to a long high shot they scored from the resulting corner.

The reserves had a cakewalk, creaming City 10-0. Red Rock Noodle Bar Man of the Match Josh Peacock topped the count with four, and was supported by Liam Nevin, 3, Linc Thew, Tim Dunn, and Trent Vohland.

Saturday's games at home kick off at the early times of 2.45pm and 5pm.

In other fixtures, Premier Youth kick off at Rochedale Rovers, 11.45am, Sunday, Metro 4 are at Mt Gravatt , 7pm, Friday, Metro 3 away to Loganholme 6pm Saturday.
