Devils to bounce back

18 Mar, 2010 03:31 PM
THE Redlands United Red Devils are looking to bounce back to form this weekend after battling both the elements and competition heavyweights Rochedale Rovers last Saturday night.

The competition doesn't get any easier for the Red Devils this Sunday as they tackle joint competition leaders, Brisbane City, at 4pm at Spencer Park Newmarket.

The main game kicks off at 4pm with the reserves at 1.45pm and the premier youth at 11.45am.

Last Saturday, Redlands United came away with nothing from their Round 4 Veto Premier League clash after going down 4-0 to Rochedale Rovers.

The home side played with a lot of confidence during a very positive opening fifteen minute period.

However, Rochedale Rovers opened the scoring from an attack that saw Rhys Hastings drill home from 10 yards.

On the half hour, Rovers doubled their lead when Steve Unsworth scored.

The goal led to a ten minute spell of Rovers domination, but the home side weathered the storm and twice came close to opening their account in the final minutes of the half.

Redlands came out for the second half knowing that if they scored first it could really open the game up and that almost happened when a Jack Lyons pass split the Rovers defence and Russell Woodruffe ran onto the ball. He got his shot away and it skidded centimeters wide of the far post.

The heavens had now opened but it didn't stop the sun shining on Rovers when they scored from a free kick that was given to them for what appeared to be a well timed challenge from Danny Byrne.

After the match Devils Assistant Coach Dave Thorogood said: "We had opportunities and didn't take them today and we were punished at the other end of the park by a side that over the years has been very clinical".

A positive for the Devils was the debut of Haydn Eames who made an excellent contribution to the side.

This came on the back of the disappointing news that the Devils talented playmaker Ramone Close could be out for three months after an MRI scan showed ligament damage.

This Sunday afternoon's games at Brisbane City are likely to be the clash of the weekend in all grades, so head out to Newmarket for an afternoon of entertaining football.
