New era in mallet sports

09 Dec, 2010 12:00 AM
CROQUET Queensland says the renaissance in mallet sports in recent times has dispelled forever the misconception that they are only for old people.

With many world champions under 40 years old, today it is very much a sport for all ages and genders.

2010 has demonstrated that Australian players are proving to be very competitive internationally in the mallet sports disciplines of golf croquet, gateball (Australia's newest mallet sport), ricochet and traditional association croquet.

The Australian Association team finished fourth behind great Britain, New Zealand and the USA from the 17 nations competing in the 2010 MacRobertson Shield series held in the UK. Alix Verge (NSW) became the 2010 World Women's Golf Croquet singles champion, with a brilliant jump shot to take the deciding last hoop from her Egyptian opponent.

The Australian Gateball team champions, Canberra, competing against 92 teams in the recent 2010 World Gateball Championship in China, became the first Australian team to win matches in a World Gateball Championship, finishing second in their pool after defeating Korea 10-7 and Brazil 15-7.

The Wynnum/Redland Croquet Club boasts two Queensland golf croquet representatives in Barry Nichol (Lota) and Ron Schodel (Redland Bay), Southern Region's Association coach in the form of John Carter (Birkdale), and David Jones (Wynnum), a member of a composite team who were runners up 10-9 to Canberra in the recent 2010 Queensland State Gateball Championships.

Jones has been appointed by the club as its 2011 co-ordinator of school and junior mallet sports. He is looking to promote junior mallet sport at the club's Kitchener Park Centre at Wynnum.

Interested young people can phone David on 33969605 for more information.
