Roll up to new bowls comp

06 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
TEAMS from community groups, families and neighbours are being sought to play bowls in the newly badged Business and Community Social Bowls competition.

The competition will be held at Victoria Point Bowls Club (formerly Redland Bowls Club) on six Fridays from 7pm from February 24 to March 30.

Coordinator Terry Cullen said he wanted to give this competition a boost and include community and family groups in the usual business team mix.

The competition has been running for six years and typically attracts corporate teams including those from the Redland City Library, real estate companies, Victoria Point High School, Redland hospital, builders and Bunnings.

"It has a broad appeal and is a lot of fun," Mr Cullen said.

Cost for entry to the competition is $30 plus $10 per player per night. Teams compete for nightly prizes and to be the series winner, based on accumulated points.

Terry said he hoped the competition, which was casual and fun, would attract younger players, ideally aged 18 plus.

"It exposes them to a new sport and they find it fun. There is time to socialise in between playing bowls and supper is included," he said.

Terry said the competition was usually held in summer and spring, but this would be the only one held this year, due to a green reconstruction during the regular spring season.

"We are keen to make this one really big," he said.

The competition takes a maximum of 32 teams.
