Wham bam, thank you Sam - this Miss is a big hit

VETERAN owner Ron Croghan reckons Samantha Miss's clean sweep of the Princess Series, which ended with another demolition of rivals in yesterday's Flight Stakes, was "wonderful".

Talk of Samantha Miss clashing with Weekend Hussler in the Cox Plate and missing the Thousand Guineas warmed the heart of trainer Peter Snowden, whose filly Portillo was the gamest of seconds.

"That'll suit me," Snowden said. "I'll pay up for the Cox Plate to get her out of my sight."

Snowden has the utmost respect for Samantha Miss and said "everything belongs to her, no excuses for the others, she is the dominant filly".

Samantha Miss's trainer, Kris Lees, breathed easy and did not rule out the Cox Plate. Lees's late father, Max, trained for Croghan for many years.

"Probably the biggest thrill I'm getting out of it is the horse is owned by Ron," Lees said. "He has been a great supporter of the stable over a number of years."

Croghan, 83 last Sunday, parted with $1.5 million for Samantha Miss as a yearling and Lees guided her to victory over last season's champion two-year-old, Sebring, in the group 1 Champagne Stakes last autumn.

Asked what it is like to have a horse such as Samantha Miss, Croghan replied: "It means the world to me."

When asked about the Cox Plate, he added: "It is up to him [Lees]."

"It is an option," Lees said. "I just wanted to get through today, didn't want to take the gloss off it.

"It [sweeping the Princess series] has only been done once before [by Angst in 1993]."

Jockey Hugh Bowman weighed in: "What can I say? She is the champion three-year-old filly, she is dominant. She is easy to ride, you make sure you don't get into any trouble."

Lees was concerned when Bowman dropped down onto the fence in the early part of the 1600m race.

Bowman did not spend long on the rail, for at the halfway mark Samantha Miss was travelling three wide and forward.

"She always travelled nice and worked into the race," Lees said.

"She has that turn of foot, she has that acceleration now, she is winning races."

Should Samantha Miss make the Cox Plate she will have a 10 kilogram advantage over Weekend Hussler.
