 Enjoy your Australia Day

Enjoy your Australia Day

25 Jan, 2010 04:07 PM
Today is Australia Day and Australians are immersed in unprecedented national fervour. Pride in our national day has blossomed almost beyond the scant recognition it received 10 to 20 years ago and beyond.

Then, Australia Day was simply another public holiday, usually celebrated not even on the actual date of January 26, but the closest Monday so as to provide a long weekend.

A change in this attitude to observing Australia Day on the actual day, brought with it a new wave of patriotism and pride in our country, its heritage and our place in the world.

Along with the abundance of Australiana – flags, t-shirts and bunting all emblazoned with the national flag and colours, has come a multitude of simply Australian events.

Here in the Redlands activities ranging from thong throwing and toad races down to the fantastic free concert the Rotary Club of Cleveland has planned for Raby Bay this afternoon are all organised simply to celebrate our national day.

While we take pride in our nation today, the evergreen debates of changing the Australian flag, the issue of a republic, the national anthem and even changing the date on which we celebrate, are dusted off at this time of the year.

These attention-grabbing headlines and debates should be seen as simply that and as the old timers always say: “If it ain’t broke, why fix it?”

Australia Day is an occasion when we should all consider our good fortune to live in the best country in the world. This should not be taken for granted and every Australian should join in the celebrations. Enjoy your Australia Day.
