THE State Government is to be applauded for its freeze on applications by pubs and clubs seeking to stay open after midnight.
The government announced last week that it had placed the moratorium on all Liquor Licensing applications for extended trading hours between midnight and 5am.
The move is retrospective and will affect about 127 applications from throughout the state currently before Liquor Licensing, along with any further applications received over the next 12 months.
The future of extended hours' applications will depend on the outcome of a Parliamentary Inquiry into alcohol-related violence.
While extended trading hours cannot be solely blamed for such violence, the move to curb further extension of trading hours is logical given the instances of late night alcohol-related violence.
The government has correctly recognised the impact on communities such as the Redlands from extended trading hours. These impacts can be beyond the violence. There are numerous examples of anti-social behaviour that arise from people walking the streets either from licensed premises or private gatherings.
Redland City has sufficient late-night licensed premises to service the demand. There is no need for more outlets to trade into the early hours of the morning.
