Thousands take sneak peek of $4.8 billion airport tunnel

Thousands of people have had a sneak peek of the $4.8 billion Airport Link toll road, open for people to walk through today.

About 30,000 people worked 28 million hours, or three years, to build the tunnel.

It was Australia’s largest road infrastructure project and is expected to open this week.

Drivers travelling to and from the CBD will bypass up to 18 sets of traffic lights using the tunnel, which bypasses suburbs including Kedron and Toombul.

There will be a three-month toll-free period.

Treasurer Tim Nicholls thanked residents living around the project’s worksites, for their cooperation and patience during construction.

“More than 30,000 local people have had to live and work during the construction period and today the community gets an opportunity to see first-hand what has been achieved," he said.
